BEFORE GOOGLE: DOLLY PARTON AND KEITH HARING
(Above: Dolly and Keith photographed by Andy Warhol at Sandy Gallin’s house in Los Angeles on August, 1985. From Warhol’s Diaries. "Steve Rubell decided not to go with us to see Dolly Parton. He stayed in bed and made phone calls ...
Got a cab over to see Dolly Parton at Sandy Gallin's. Dolly doesn't want anyone to know where she lives because she's had death threats. So we were there and I guess Dolly was appalled that we brought as many people, but Keith and everybody had wanted to have a totally star-filled day. Sandy Gallin had the spots measured where he wanted the portraits to go on the walls and everything. And then we walked back to the hotel.")
Brad Gooch’s new biography of Haring was just published. You can buy it here. "My contribution to the world is my ability to draw,” said Keith. “I will draw as much as I can for as many people as I can for as long as I can."
Andy Warhol died of complications from surgery in 1987. He was 58. Steve Rubell died of AIDS in 1989. He was 45. Keith Haring died of AIDS in 1990. He was 31. Sandy Gallin died of cancer in 2017. He was 77.
Dolly Parton turned 78 on January 19th. “Honestly, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, when I see young people today and I see what they're going to have to go through, especially in this day and time, I would honestly rather be this age than that age," Parton has said. “Of course, everyone would like to stay 35 forever, and in my mind I kind of do. But I can't get caught in that trap of thinking, 'I've got to do this or that.' I make every moment count. I may live to be 100 or I may die tomorrow, but whenever that is, I will know I died trying, and I will know I've done everything I could to make the most of everything. As long as I stay healthy, the numbers shouldn't matter. I don't feel my age, I don't work my age, I don't think my age.”
